Fmr. Va. gov. hopeful seeks to buy mill

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A former candidate for Virginia governor wants to buy a paper mill in Isle of Wight County and covert it into a wood-fired power plant.

Terry McAuliffe and other investors are making a bid for the International Paper Co. mill, which will be closed this year, putting 1,100 people out of work. The Memphis-based company is closing the Franklin mill because of the recession and overcapacity in the paper industry.

McAuliffe says his proposal is about creating so-called green jobs, which he emphasized during his unsuccessful run for the Democratic nomination for governor last year.
