RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The flu season is making a late arrival to Virginia.

State public health officials say the February start of the flu season is possibly the latest in a quarter-century. On the plus side, the seasonal flu vaccine remains widely available.

The Virginia Department of Health monitors lab reports, hospital emergency rooms and urgent care centers to monitor cases of flu. Within the last two weeks those indicators show an uptick in flu activity in Virginia.

The state's activity level is now at "regional." That means the flu is active in multiple regions of the state.
