RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - State officials say hundreds of small fish died after diesel fuel spilled into a lake and stream near Henrico County's public safety building.
Department of Environmental Quality spokesman Bill Hayden says inspectors discovered the spill Friday and notified the county, which immediately began a cleanup.
He said about 650 fish, mostly bluegill and pumpkinseed, were found dead or dying in Lake Hening and Rocky Branch stream. The county set up absorbent barriers to stop the fuel, which Hayden said got farther downstream than anyone realized at the time.
