RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia State Police will add nearly 100 new men and women Friday following the 118th Basic Session's graduation in Caroline County.

According to VSP, the class is the largest of its kind, also consisting of a record number of female graduates, 13.

“We are proud to see such diversity building among our ranks,” VSP Superintendent Colonel W. Steven Flaherty said. “The State Police has worked hard over the past 80 years to reflect the assorted populations of people living and working within the Commonwealth. The outstanding men and women of this 118th generation of troopers have undergone a demanding and intense training program in order achieve the esteemed recognition of becoming one of Virginia’s Finest.”

The group of 89 were selected out of more than 1,800 applicants and began a rigorous 37-week training session in February.

The new troopers will report to their individual assignments next Monday, Oct. 22.
