Va. specialty crop grants available

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Growers of specialty crops in Virginia have until April 17 to apply for grants up to $30,000.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture defines specialty crops as fruits, vegetables, tree nuts and nursery crops that typically are not covered by crop insurance. Those crops include commodities such as corn and wheat.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said it will administer an estimated $500,000 in special crop grants.

A key goal of the specialty crop grants is to enhance the competitiveness of those agricultural products.
