Suffolk council bans dog tethering

SUFFOLK, Va. (AP) — Beginning in September, dog owners in Suffolk will no longer be able to tether their animals outdoors.

Media outlets report that Suffolk City Council approved an ordinance Wednesday banning dog tethering. The ban goes in to effect Sept. 1.

Violators will face a $250 fine.

Council members discussed restricting tethering to 10 hours a day. But Police Chief Thomas Bennett said a time limit would be difficult and costly to enforce.
