VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — The first of the Navy's next generation of rapid transport ships has arrived at its homeport in Virginia.
WAVY-TV (http://bit.ly/XmRYz7) reports that the USNS Spearhead arrived at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek this past weekend.
The Spearhead is the Navy's first joint high-speed vessel.
The Navy says the 338-foot-long aluminum catamaran is designed for rapid transport of troops and equipment. It can carry up to 600 tons. The ship has a crew of 22 civil service mariners employed by Military Sealift Command.
