Fairfax County may reinstate red-light cameras

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) — Fairfax County may bring back red-light cameras after scrapping the program in the past because it was losing money.

Two members of the County Board of Supervisors suggested on Tuesday that the county staff should study options and recommendations to reinstate the red-light enforcement program.

Fairfax County had red-light cameras at 10 intersections in the past. But it did away with them in 2005 when the General Assembly decided not to renew a law giving local jurisdictions authority to use them.

The law was reinstated in 2007. But Fairfax decided not to restart the program because the county lost more than $1 million on the program before.

Supervisor Michael Frey suggested bringing back the cameras. He says a study found the cameras improved safety in Arlington County.
