VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — The Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center is under investigation following the death of a pit bull in an outdoor dog run.
Virginia Beach police tell media outlets that the shelter's policies and procedures will be examined to determine whether they were followed and whether they should be changed.
Wayne Gilbert with Animal Control says a shelter employee let the 10-year-old dog, named Batman, outside Sunday afternoon. The dog was left outside overnight.
Police say a volunteer found the dog at 11 a.m. Monday. Two employees tried to revive Batman but he was pronounced dead.
Overnight temperatures ranged from 21 to 32 degrees.
A necropsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
