CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) — The discovery of unexploded naval ordnance halted river traffic for several hours on portions of the southern branch of the Elizabeth River in Chesapeake.

The Coast Guard said the discovery occurred Friday morning when contractors working on the old Gilmerton Bridge uncovered the ordnance. A Navy explosive bomb disposal was called in and removed the ordnance.

As a precaution, Chesapeake police had blocked all train and bridge traffic for several hours. The Gilmerton Bridge was reopened Friday afternoon.

There was no immediate word on how much ordnance was discovered by the Navy team.
