MELFA, Va. (AP) — A string of arsons is causing anxiety levels to rise on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
Virginia State Police say more than 60 unoccupied structures have been intentionally set on fire in rural Accomack County since November. Each occurs at night.
So far, nobody has been injured. But county residents worry it is only a matter of time before an occupied home is set on fire. Sometimes the fires are in isolated areas, while others are set behind occupied dwellings.
Authorities are increasing patrols in the expansive county that borders Maryland in hopes of being led to the culprit — or culprits, as police say is more likely. A $25,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the person's arrest and conviction.
