BASTIAN, Va. (AP) — Virginia State Police are continuing to investigate the unsolved 1983 slayings of two workers at a gas station in Bland County.
Capt. G. Gason Miles tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph (http://bit.ly/ZuqUi6 ) that the primary suspect is now elderly, lives in a nursing home and has dementia.
Police found the bodies of 22-year-old Darren Walker of Bastian and 26-year-old Steven Shinault of Max Meadows in a back storage room in the gas station outside Bastian on Sept. 14, 1983. Both men had been shot.
Investigators believed at the time that robbery was a motive because money was missing from the cash register.
Miles says the slayings might have been made to look like a robbery.
