WISE, Va. (WAVY) - A report of a gunman on the campus of the University of Virginia-Wise turned out to be a hoax, according to State Police.
The school's website posted the following cryptic messages throughout Wednesday evening:
Corinne Geller with Virginia State Police told WAVY.com a student called 911 Wednesday night reporting a gunman on campus. When the student was interviewed by special agents, the student admitted the whole incident was a hoax.
Commonwealth's Attorney Ron Elkins tweeted the gunman was a hoax just before the school's website announced the lift of the lockdown.
Geller said the incident was investigated by UVA-Wise Police, Town of Wise Police, Wise County Sheriff's Office, Town of Pound Police and Virginia State Police.
