Absentee voter applications mailed out

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - Officials say the absentee voter applications being mailed out across Hampton Roads are legal.

According to Al Spardlin with the City of Chesapeake, the forms are absentee ballot applications. He says the party or parties sending out the applications likely called the Virginia State Board of Elections asking for a list of registered voters.

Because Virginia is a no party registration state, there is no way for the political parties to tell voters' political affiliations.

If voters choose to fill out the applications, the parties are required to mail them to the SBE which will mail the voters an absentee voter ballot. Spaldin says the parties may follow up with phone calls asking if the application was received.

You can check the status of your application by calling the SBE Toll Free at 1-800-552-9745.
