RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia State Police have arrested dozens of women's rights activists protesting legislation requiring an ultrasound before an abortion.

Nearly 500 protesters gathered on the grounds of the Capitol Saturday. They planned to march to the Executive Mansion where Gov. Bob McDonnell lives to protest the ultrasound bill and others dealing with abortion that recently passed the General Assembly.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/ye99lx) that Virginia State Police with plastic shields held demonstrators at bay while armed officers arrested protesters, who sat on the steps of the Capitol with locked arms.

Protest organizers said they had a permit to gather on Capitol Square at the Bell Tower.

Those who were arrested were placed on a bus that was parked near the Capitol. The total number of arrests was not immediately available.
