GLOUCESTER, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell on Monday morning reached out to Gloucester County residents impacted by Saturday's tornados.

During his trip, he got an upclose look at the damage at Page Middle School and told residents he'd already seen the tornado's path from the air.

"Given how long it stayed on the ground and the scope of the destruction, it's amazing more people weren't hurt or killed," said Gov. McDonnell. "I'm very impressed with the way government officials at the state and local level are working together."

The governor declared a state of emergency on Sunday to get state resources moving quickly to help storm victims. McDonnell is also hoping for federal assistance to deal with the disaster.

Right now, the governor said, officials are trying to determine who has insurance as well as trying to assess the costs of damage.
