WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) - It's a mascot menagerie.
Suggestions for The College of William and Mary's new mascot have topped 300 since school officials asked the public in March for help in choosing a costumed character to represent the school. Nominations submitted to a search committee include the mythical Phoenix, eight other birds, a feathered horse and a stalk of asparagus.
Asparagus? The veggie's supporter notes that if served with cheese, asparagus is an edible representation of the school colors.
Nominations will be taken until June 30. President Taylor Reveley will make the final decision.
In 2006, the NCAA ruled that William and Mary's feathered logo was demeaning to Native Americans and had to go, but the use of the word "Tribe" was fine.
