Fast food chains eliminate pink slime

    PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - McDonald's and other fast food chains have stopped using what's been called "pink slime" in hamburgers and other products.

    Since a picture of the product leaked online, the ground beef additive has been called pink slime.

    Pink slime is spare beef trimmings treated with ammonium hydroxide which is used to kill any bacteria in the trimmings.

    McDonald's move comes after TV Chef Jamie Oliver made public calls for the restaurant chains to stop using the slime.

    According to the New York Times, Burger King and Taco Bell have also agreed to stop using the product.

    The additive is approved by the USDA.
