Weather Underground Forecast for Sunday, February 24, 2013.
A strong winter storm continues moving across the Western U.S. on Sunday, bringing more heavy snow and strong winds to the Rockies. A strong low pressure system over the West continues pulling moisture in from the Pacific Ocean. This will continue triggering heavy snow showers as it moves over the Northern and Central Rockies, reaching into the High Plains by Sunday evening. Expect snowfall accumulation to range from 6 to 8 inches in most areas, with higher elevations seeing over a foot of new snow. Expect 2 to 4 inches of new snow from western South Dakota through northwestern Kansas. Winter weather warnings and advisories will remain in effect as this system will continue to create dangerous roads and travel conditions. As this system moves to the east, another system drops into the Pacific Northwest from the Gulf of Alaska. This will create more rain and mountain snow showers across Washington and far northern Oregon.
In the East, a low pressure system finally moves offshore of the East Coast, allowing for snow showers to diminish for the Northeast. However, a few light snow showers may persist for areas along downwind shores of the Great Lakes, and parts of the far northeast from Vermont through Maine. In the Southeast, the cold front associated with this system will linger over the Gulf Coast, triggering more scattered showers and thunderstorms from the Lower Mississippi River Valley through Florida. Some of these storms may turn severe with strong winds and large hail.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Saturday have ranged from a morning low of -11 degrees at Gunnison, Colo. to a high of 88 degrees at Melbourne, Fla.
