Most taxpayers can prepare and e-file federal tax returns for free.
More than a dozen leading software companies make their tax preparation products available online through the IRS.
It's free to people who earned $57,000 or less, which is 70 percent of all taxpayers. Higher-income earners can use free online fillable forms. Both options include electronic filing and direct deposit options for refunds.
Free File asks questions that the taxpayer answers, then picks the right forms, does all the math and helps find tax breaks.
Free File is available online at IRS.gov.
