Suffolk, Isle of Wight may get assistance

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services ( VDACS) declared Isle of Wight County and Suffolk disaster areas.

Primary reasons for the designation includes excessive heat, high humidity, Hurricane Irene, Tropical Storm Lee and excessive rainfall between April 1, 2011 and Oct. 31, 2011.

Matthew J. Lohr, VDACS Commissioner, said, “I am grateful that the USDA has declared these areas eligible for federal assistance. This part of the state was hit hard by an array of natural disasters lasting for more than seven months. I am certain farmers will appreciate any assistance they can get.”

James City, Southampton and Surry counties, along with Chesapeake, Franklin, Newport News and Portsmouth received contiguous disaster declarations, which means they are located next to primary disaster areas.

Farmers in Suffolk and Isle of Wight have eight months to apply for assistants to the Farm Service Agency (FSA).
