CHESHIRE, Conn. (WTNH) - A complaint was filed from a home for disabled clients after a staff member served a cake mixed with pills.

Sunday, shortly after 5:30 p.m., a staff member served pieces of a cake, tainted with pills, to resident clients. The cake was baked and brought into the house by another staff member on Saturday, January 3rd.

A staff member later observed what appeared to be small pills in the cake. The cake was turned over and more of the pills were spotted. That prompted the complaint to State Police; EMS was summoned to the scene.

The clients and a staff member, who consumed the cake, did not appear to suffer any ill effects but all the clients were transported by ambulance to St. Mary's and Bradley Memorial Hospital to be examined as a precautionary measure.

The State Police investigators interviewed the employees at the scene and also located and interviewed the employee who baked and brought the cake to the facility. Troopers determined that during the baking process the employee stated she accidentally spilled the medication, that was prescribed for her, in the kitchen. She believed that all the pills were accounted for and at that time she was not aware that any pills spilled into the cake batter.

The medication was positively identified and that information was provided to both medical facilities.

State Police investigators will continue this investigation to determine if any criminal charges will be filed in this incident.
