NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - People gathered at Town Point Park to show their patriotism and solidarity for a 9/11 "Healing and Remembrance" ceremony.

A major fixture of that gathering was a ship on which 17 sailors lost their lives nearly a year before.

The locally-based sailors died when terrorists bombed the USS Cole in October of 2000.

Sunday's ceremony included four moments of silence, interlaced with the names of nearly 3,000 people who died on 9/11 as well as those 17 Cole sailors.

One of those sailor's fathers said, before there was a 9/11 there was a 10/12.

"We all felt the same pain, I had to grieve twice, I grieved for my son and the sailors and I also grieved for the 9-11 families," said Lou Gunn.

The day concluded with a free Virginia Symphony Sunset Concert "America the Beautiful."
