GOP rivals get jump on '13 gov race

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, rivals for the 2013 Republican gubernatorial nomination, took in about $1 million each in campaign contributions last year.

In disclosures by the two officeholders on Tuesday's deadline for final 2011 campaign finance reports by legislative and statewide elected officials, Bolling reported nearly $1.1 million for the year to $937,000 for Cuccinelli.

Bolling's political action committee carried slightly more than $983,000 into 2012 while Cuccinelli reported nearly $733,000 on hand at the end of the year.

Now bitter rivals who barely speak, they were not competitors for most of 2011. Bolling had assumed Cuccinelli would run for re-election. But Cuccinelli announced his candidacy for governor in mid-November, roiling what seemed a settled and serene GOP field to succeed Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell.
