HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - The Democratic caucus to choose a replacement candidate to fill Delegate Tom Gear's seat in Virginia's 91st House District was canceled.

The caucus was scheduled for Thursday, but Democratic candidates said that it wasn't the right time for them to run, Hampton Democratic Committee Chair Gaylene Kanoyton said.

Poquoson Mayor Gordon Helsel won the Republican primary on Tuesday night with a total of 1,724 votes.

Kanoyton said, "Democrats will be putting the full court press to recruit a candidate for the fall."

Virginia’s 91st House District serves residents of Hampton, Poquoson, and York County.
