Nuclear manufacturing plant delayed

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Areva Newport News says it is delaying the start of manufacturing at its 300,000-square-foot facility until 2013.
Officials with the joint venture between Northrop Grumman and Areva say a slower-than-expected process of federal government approval of new nuclear power plants is delaying the operation.
The companies broke ground in July 2009 on the facility that will make large components used in the nuclear power industry. The plant near the Northrop Grumman shipyard was scheduled to be operational by 2012.
When first announced, officials said the project would create 540 jobs and result in a $363 capital investment. The project includes $3 million from the Governor's Opportunity Fund and $1.5 million performance-based grant from the Virginia Investment Partnership program.
