CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - University of North Carolina system President Tom Ross is recommending tuition and fee increases of less than 10 percent.
Ross is expected to offer the board of governors the details in the next few weeks.
He said Thursday he hopes the increases will be less than the 9 percent increase last year.
Ross says he wants to balance low tuition and high quality to maintain the system's excellence.
The various schools in the system have proposed tuition and fee increases ranging from about 4 percent at UNC Pembroke to 13.5 percent at UNC-Asheville.
The increases include 11.4 percent at UNC-Chapel Hill, 10.4 percent at North Carolina State University and 8.5 percent at North Carolina Central University.
A group of students protested the increases at the UNC board meeting Thursday.
