CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - The University of North Carolina Board of Governors have voted to increase tuition across the system of 16 university campuses by nearly 9 percent on average.
The board's Friday vote in Chapel Hill took place in the midst of a raucous demonstration by scores of student protesters angry at the increases.
The Association of Student Governments had agreed to provide transportation from every UNC campus for students who want to protest. The ASG is comprised of the student body presidents from each school.
North Carolina State University student organizer Bryan Perlmutter says more increases will close the doors of higher education to many students.
But UNC officials say the increases are needed to partially offset over $400 million in funds cut from their budgets by the legislature last year.
