Storm-damaged NC-12 to reopen

HATTERAS ISLAND, N.C. (WAVY) - The final construction touches are being placed on NC-12, which was heavily ravaged by storms throughout 2012.

According to officials with NCDOT, the highway will be reopening to traffic at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The storms washed away protective dunes from the highway, making sections of Hatteras Island inaccessible by vehicles for weeks. Many residents relied on ferry service, which will be canceled once the route is fully functioning again.
