Jones concerned about Hatteras signs

CAPE HATTERAS NATIONAL SEASHORE, N.C. (A - North Carolina Congressman Walter Jones is asking the National Park Service to change signs posted at Cape Hatteras that he says falsely tell people they can't leave footprints on the beach.

In a letter sent Friday to park service officials, Jones says the new signs make it appear that people visiting the Cape Hatteras National Seashore Recreational Area are only allowed to walk in shallow water to wash away their footprints.

Jones says new regulations designed to protect nesting sea turtles actually limit people to walking below the high tide line, and doesn't require them to actually stand in the ocean.

The North Carolina Republican says the signs will confuse visitors and hurt local businesses.

A call to the park service was not immediately returned Friday.
