RODANTHE, NC - The nor'easter gave Highway 12 in Rodanthe, North Carolina a beating. Part of the road buckled during last week's storm.
Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m., the North Carolina DOT opened one lane of traffic to all vehicles traveling on Highway 12 north of Rodanthe. This lane replaces the temporary four wheel drive lanes that has been in use since Sunday.
Passage on the one lane is subject to the following conditions:
Gov. Beverly Perdue says she'll declare an emergency in Dare County with hope the state can tap into federal highway funds to repair the washed out Outer Banks road. Perdue planned to visit parts of the Outer Banks Tuesday, including the washed-out stretch of NC 12.
The N.C. Department of Transportation's Ferry Division announced Monday that it is activating the Stumpy Point-Rodanthe route for emergency purposes. The division has gained approval from the U.S. Coast Guard to activate the emergency route. Click here for dates and times.
Ron Alderman captured video of the unpassable portion of the road on Pea Island and shared it with WAVY.com. View his incredible images on the video player on this page.
The storm changed the Outer Banks' scenery in a variety of unusual ways. A large underground swimming pool now lay above ground, on the beach - another image captured by Alderman's lens.
And homes that once lined the shore now sadly are part of it.
For information about the ferry service in the area, go to the Ferry Division web site at http://www.ncferry.org or call 1-800-293-3779 and Press 1. There are several ways for citizens to find out about road conditions. Travelers can call 511, the state's toll-free travel information line, or visit the NCDOT Traveler Information Web site at www.ncdot.gov/traffictravel
