OREGON INLET, N.C. (WAVY) - A total of $4.5 million is on its way to continue dredging the Oregon Inlet.
The disaster aid will come from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
It's just a portion of $1.5 billion designated to repair navigation channels in response to Hurricane Irene. When the storm hit, it shoaled the inlet even more.
The Oregon Inlet is a lifeline for local fisherman who need access to the Atlantic Ocean.
Republican Congressman Walter Jones, who represents the Outer Banks and helped secure that funding, said, "Fishermen and boaters depend on safe navigation through this channel. I am pleased that the Corps agreed to use the money appropriated by Congress to help address the serious problems at Oregon Inlet."
