Officials want Lejeune highway reopened

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Local government and business leaders want the Marines to reopen a North Carolina state highway through Camp Lejeune closed five years ago to everyone but the military.
The Marines limited access to North Carolina 172 as they tightened security.
The Daily News of Jacksonville reports (http://bit.ly/JlsZCi ) the road is a short cut skirting the back of the base connecting the Topsail area and the Crystal Coast.
It's estimated the closure affects 1,400 vehicles a day.
The Onslow County Board of Commissioners wants the base to reopen the road to limited civilian traffic, issuing passes to commuters who use it routinely. The commissioners say it would save those commuters on gasoline.
The Marines are reviewing the request.
