ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say two men are recuperating in the hospital after their small, fixed-wing airplane crashed into a corn field North Carolina.

Multiple media outlets report that the fixed-wing Mooney M-20C crashed Tuesday afternoon near the Fairview community in Buncombe County.

Officials say the plane left Winston-Salem around 4:15 p.m. and was bound for Asheville when it had engine trouble, clipped a tree, crashed nose-first into a field, then flipped onto its top.

James Hastings and James Monroe are both from Winston-Salem and work for Southern Community Bank. They were listed in serious condition.

The Federal Aviation Administration is planning to investigate.
