NC 12 current road condition status

HATTERAS, N.C. (WAVY) - Officials are considering a beach replenishment project that will provide an extra buffer to prevent further overwash and damage to Highway 12. Access has been closed on-and-off for weeks, making a two-hour ferry ride the only way to get to and from Hatteras Island when the road is covered with standing water.

Dare County officials are keeping their website updated with the road's status. Click here for current conditions.

Officials are still trying to decide how to deal with the ripped up road that suffered heavy damage from two strong storms this year.

According to NCDOT, the planned repairs for Highway 12 that were due to be completed by the end of November have been delayed due to the overwash. Highway 12 will remain closed through Thanksgiving, and NCDOT says holiday travelers will be accommodated with ferry rides.

The ferry from Stumpy Point to Rodanthe is still running and extra ferries have been added to the Swan Quarter-Ocracoke route.

Ferry information can be found at www.ncdot.gov/ferry .
