RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A civil rights organization is using radio to urge North Carolina voters to oppose the proposed marriage amendment in the name of keeping discrimination out of the state constitution.
The state chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People said Thursday it's started running radio spots across North Carolina as part of a multimedia effort to defeat the amendment.
The May 8 referendum asks voters whether traditional marriage should be the only domestic legal union recognized in North Carolina. The state NAACP says it's not taking a position on gay marriage with its amendment opposition.
The pro-amendment Vote FOR Marriage NC also said it rolled out a new TV ad challenging commercials that suggest the amendment would deny health insurance to children and weaken domestic violence laws.
