Lifeguards said rip currents were moderate

OUTER BANKS, N.C. (WAVY) - Residents and tourists in the Outer Banks headed to the beach in full force this Labor Day.

The ocean had been off limits due to Hurricane Earl. Now, the ocean is open to visitors again, much to the happiness of businessowners who may yet be able to salvage the holiday weekend.

However, lifeguards said swimmers still need to watch out for rip currents. They had to rescue a few out of the water over the weekend.

"We're blessed with a really really nice low tide today, which means that we do have some moderate rips out here, but it's not an adventure yet," said David Elder from Kill Devil Hills Ocean Rescue.

Lifeguards said if you do get caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore until you're free.
