ROUGEMONT, N.C. (AP) - National and local officials have joined to rescue more than 100 animals from a property in Person County

A statement issued Tuesday by the Humane Society of the United States said the Person County Sheriff's Office served a search and seizure warrant on the property in Rougemont. Area organizations helped local animal control and rescued 39 horses and nearly 70 small-breed dogs, cats and birds kept at the property

The horses were described as very thin. Some are suffering from medical issues that require immediate attention.

The dogs and cats were kept in unsanitary housing and many are afflicted with eye infections, skin infections and other signs of severe neglect.

The owner surrendered the animals. They will be taken to area shelters for immediate evaluation and treatment by veterinarians.
