Mom speaks after NC girl fight

HERTFORD, N.C. - A North Carolina mother is fighting back with words after another mother allegedly hit her daughter during a fist fight.

Kim Wehner is charged with delinquency of a minor and assault and battery, for encouraging her daughter to fight harder, according to deputies.

The fight happened Jan. 8 on Comanche Trail in Hertford. Deputies say the two teenage girls were fighting over a boy.

The other teen's mother, Maureen Register, heard whispers of an upcoming fight on Facebook. She admits she commented on the thread, because her daughter was being threatened.

Register thought the issue had been dropped, until she saw cell phone video on her daughter's Facebook page. Register took it to the sheriff to press charges.

"I am the one who called on the mother, because I feel it's wrong," said Register. "I'm going to take a stand for that."

The blonde in the video is Register's daughter. The woman wearing a gray sweatshirt and ponytail is reportedly Wehner. You can hear the woman yelling profanities and see her hovering over the fight instead of stopping it.

"She seemed like she was more into the fight than the girls were," said Register. "I mean, I understand teenagers fight, but, I do not find this acceptable for parents to be there and not pull them aside. Or, call the other parent to say, 'Can you come down here? We have a problem.'"

Register said the mental beating has gotten worse since she pressed charges. She said her daughter has received death threats online and is being harassed at home.

"There were people driving back and forth, stopping in the middle of the street, screaming things, honking their horns," said Register, who plans to put her daughter through the "Scared Straight" program to deal with her behavioral issues.

"I just want what's best for all children," said Register. "I'm not a perfect mother. I don't think anyone can be a perfect mother."

She said she hopes the other family gets the help they need too, both mother and daughter.

When WAVY.com went to Kim Wehner's home last Friday, her daughter answered the door. She identified herself as the girl who fought Register's daughter in the video, and said the fight is their business. She refused to comment further.

Wehner bonded out of jail late last week.
