Arvato laying off dozens of workers

Layoffs follow slump in demand for CDs and DVDs

WEAVERVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A provider of digital services is laying off dozens of workers following a slump in demand for CDs and DVDs after fulfilling retailers' holiday orders.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports Saturday that Arvato Digital Services is cutting at least 50 workers from its Weaverville plant.

Human resources director Greg Brown says the company eliminated one of three shifts in disc production. He didn't know exactly how many workers were being laid off, since some were taking retirement packages.

But Brown says Arvato is still hiring for a new call center in Weaverville. The company announced plans last December to create more than 400 jobs over three years.

Arvato Digital Services is part of Arvato AG, a division of German-based Bertelsmann AG. Arvato has over 60,000 employees in 35 countries.
