PERQUIMANS CO., N.C. (WAVY) - A construction worker is the prime suspect in a Perquimans County homicide.

Investigators arrested 19-year-old Michael Dalton Helms of Myrtle Beach, S.C. Wednesday and charged him with the murder of Chad Austin Colson, 27, of Hertford, N.C.

Colson's body was discovered in a ditch on Holiday Island Road in Perquimans County Tuesday just before noon.

Helms was staying in Holiday Island while working a job in the area, according to the Perquimans County Sheriff's Office. Investigators confronted a group of workers about the homicide and Helms reportedly took responsibility for the crime.

Helms told investigators he and Colson got into an altercation after he believed Colson lied about a narcotics transaction.

The Perquimans County Sheriff was assisted by the NC State Bureau of Investigation.

Helms is due in court on March 7, 2012. He is being held without bond.
