WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) — The athletic department at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington is getting more money to work with in the 2013-14 academic year.
The StarNews of Wilmington reports (http://bit.ly/15WsJJ1 ) that the UNC Board of Governors last month approved an athletics fee increase that will funnel an additional $1.2 million into the UNCW athletic budget.
The fee would rise to $538 in 2013-14. It was $433 in 2010-11.
A report from the board says UNCW plans to use the money for a full-time assistant coach for both its golf teams, and to help fully fund scholarships for all women's sports, in addition to other needs.
UNCW Chancellor Gary Miller requested the additional funding from his board of trustees in December. He said then that expenses exceeded revenues by $1.4 million.
