NC school system to seek ban on fundraising candy

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — An advisory committee of the Wake County Public Schools System is ready to tell booster clubs to find healthier ways to help raise cash.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reports (http://bit.ly/13BuD2b ) that the School Health Advisory Council is set to recommend Tuesday that the school board move to ban the sale of unhealthy foods at school fundraisers. The policy would govern sales at concession stands for athletic events.

Broughton (BRAWT'-un) High School booster club president Greg Weaver says his ability to raise money is being restricted. He said no one will buy celery sticks to watch a soccer game.

A previous council recommendation led to a policy which requires athletic events, dances and other on-campus events outside the school day to offer two or more healthy foods and/or beverages.
