BURLINGTON, N.C. (AP) — Authorities say a man is dead after being struck by an Amtrak passenger train in Burlington.
Police in Burlington said the engineer of the train told investigators that he sounded the horn when he spotted the man sitting on an overpass. He said the man tried to move but was unable to get out of the path of the train before it struck him Friday around 7:28 p.m.
The victim was identified by police as 50-year-old Glenn Edger Plester. He had no known address.
The train, with 182 passengers on board, was headed to Raleigh. There were no injuries on the train and no damage to the equipment.
An investigation into the accident is continuing.
