NC House Republicans lay out voter ID bill process

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina House leaders say the process to create a bill requiring photo identification for citizens to vote will be slow so lawmakers can receive public input about what such a mandate should look like.

Speaker Thom Tillis said Tuesday at a news conference that Republicans will take a "deliberative, responsible and interactive approach" before passing a yet-written bill in his chamber sometime next month.

The process begins Wednesday with the first of many House Elections Committee meetings before a bill is rolled out in about three weeks. Committee chairman Rep. David Lewis says some groups oppose voter ID on principle but they'll also have a chance to influence the final product.

Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue vetoed photo ID in 2011. Current GOP Gov. Pat McCrory supports the idea.
