ECU employee charged with stealing mail, money

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) — An employee at East Carolina University is accused of embezzling money by stealing the mail of hundreds of people.

Police on Friday charged Iris Harper with embezzlement of state property by a public employee.

Authorities say Harper worked in a campus mail room. They say she would return after the mail room had closed and go through the mail, taking gift cards and cash.

Officers have been investigating the problem since last year, when students complained of not getting their mail.

Harper was released on bond, and it wasn't known if she had an attorney. She has worked at ECU since 1991.
