CURRITUCK COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) - North Carolina's newly passed budget included approval for a new bridge across the Currituck Sound.
The Mid-Currituck Bridge will cross the Currituck Sound from Aydlett on the mainland to Corolla.
The proposal has been in the works for years, and could cut about 50 miles off the drive from Hampton Roads to the Northern Outer Banks.
Senator Mark Basnight of Dare County was instrumental in getting the funding into the budget.
The bridge is estimated to cost over 650 million dollars and open in 2014.
It could cost drivers 10 to 15 dollars each way to help foot the bill
