GATESVILLE, N.C. - A Virginia Beach man sits behind bars in North Carolina Saturday
after he led police on a seven-hour search in the woods of Gates
County.
Gates County Sheriff Ed Webb said the incident began early
Saturday when the suspect tried to buy beer from several stores.
Cashiers refused to sell beer to Danny Danenberg, Jr. because he
was too drunk, Webb said. Danenberg decided to drive his 1999 Dodge
Durango to Hertford County in an attempt to buy beer there.
While in Hertford County, Danenberg was involved in a hit and
run. He then drove back into Gates County on Rt. 13 when deputies
tried to stop him about 8:45am.
Danenburg refused to stop and eventually crashed his vehicle
off Tinkham Road. He then got out of his SUV and fled into nearby
woods.
Gates County Sheriff's deputies, North Carolina Highway
Patrol troopers, and officers from the North Carolina Wildlife
Resources Commission searched on foot and used both a helicopter
and an airplane in the search.
Turkey hunters spotted Danenberg trying to break into a house
and called police. He was finally arrested about 3:30pm.
Danenberg faces several charges including driving while
intoxicated, breaking and entering, failure to stop for police, and
damage to state property.
