NORFOLK, Va. - The U.S. Navy announced Monday that the guided missile cruiser USS Anzio (CG 68) will deploy to the 5th and 6th Fleet area of operations Wednesday from Naval Station Norfolk.

Operating in the Mediterranean Sea, Eastern Atlantic Ocean, Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean, the Navy says the Anzio will support theater security cooperation by participating in regional exercises with allies, making diplomatic port calls and responding to any contingency.

The Ticonderoga-class cruiser, commanded by Captain F. J. Olmo, is named after the World War II amphibious assault on the beachhead at Anzio, Italy, on Jan. 22, 1944.

The 567-foot-long ship has a crew of about 364.
