NORFOLK, Va. - Four civil service mariners are recovering at Hampton Roads hospitals after a large wave knocked them off their feet.

The mariners were on board the fleet replenishment oiler USNS Kanawha Thursday morning doing routine training about 60 miles east of Virginia Beach at the time of the accident. Susan Melow with Military Sealift Command says the mariners were conducting replacement training alongside USNS Big Horn when they were hurt.

US Coast Guard helicopters flew two of the injured crewmembers to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. The other two patients, with more serious injuries, were taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
